There is a 32 million word difference between what a child in a professional home hears and what a child from a welfare home hears. According to Jim Trelease, a reading expert, “if ‘No Child Left Behind’ expects the teacher to get the welfare child caught-up, she will have to speak 10 words a second for 900 hours just to reach the 32 million mark by year’s end,”

An adult from a low income household has a vocabulary equal to that of a 3 year old from a middle class family in length of word and number of words used.

About one in 20 adults in the United States is not literate in English.

A child from a middle class family, entering grade one, has been exposed to 1200-1700 hours of one-on-one picture book reading time with an adult. A child from a low income family entering grade one has been exposed to around 25 hours of one-on-one picture book reading time

STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

Rolling Readers will be placing a greater emphasis on STEM within our current programs. We encourage our readers to introduce a wide variety of topics during their reading sessions. Starting in Fall 2012, we will be including a “Math Moment” during our Read Aloud time. Our volunteers will offer a simple word math problem that in some way relates to one of their weekly stories. This is an easy and non-stressful way to show students that math can be related to all types of topics. The word problems, and their answers, will be provided to the volunteers by Rolling Readers. We want to make this seamless, to both students and volunteers.

Look for Library displays throughout the county during the summer and fall months. Training/Orientations are often held at libraries.

Volunteer Its Good For You

In a recent US Today letter inresponse to an article regarding real estate developers and tough economic times, Donna Butts, the executive director of Generations United noted the dangers of false divisions of age or generation in communities. She noted that, "older adults who take part in intergenerational interaction are happier, more active and healthier. In one California study, seniors who volunteered with children burned 20% more calories per week, experienced fewer falls, were less reliant on canes and performed better on memory tests than their peers." This information can be added to the countless number of reports touting the benefits of volunteering.
